Phil Charte was many things...a gifted athlete, a smart, and really funny guy, he was a  captain of the wrestling team at Goffstown High School, in fact he was a State Champion at 135 pounds. He went to Parris Island and became an outstanding Marine. My wife and I loved seeing him at the meets, and laughing and joking with him about everything and anything. Most importantly he was a good friend to my son and daughter.

In so many ways, Veterans are an important part of our community. They are driven by purpose, and a desire to serve. They leave their homes, and family's, for faraway places, simply because they give their word to do so. I marvel at the commitment, and the discipline they exemplify by the very act of their service. I am proud to be in their presence.

Everyone remembers their first car...it is a right of passage that gives you the first taste of adult freedom. It is a satisfying moment...even when it is unspoken, parents telling you, we trust you to go places by yourself.

The staff of Belknap Subaru wishes it's own, Airman Kendall Ives, best wishes, and our pride in her service, as she prepares to deploy to Kosovo in April. She visited New Hampshire last week in preparation for the six-month assignment, to visit with family and friends. On my desk is a lamp. The lamp is shaped like the leg of a beautiful woman in fish net stocking, wearing a black high-heel-pump. This replica from a Christmas Story was a gift from my Dad. It is a gift I cherish! Everyday when I walk in my office it makes me smile. I think of him and the movie and I get a happy little grin.

It wasn't an expensive gift, in fact some people look at it and think it a little weird, but I don't care...it makes me smile!
