As I approach my 19,480th day, I am struck by the speed at which life proceeds. I have fond memories of my childhood, and carefree days in the sun. I remember my first bike, guitar, girlfriend, and broken heart. I remember with excitement, meeting my wife, our wedding day, the birth of our children, and days at the camp...I keep these memories in my vault, they are mine to enjoy for as long as my memory holds out.
The last several months have been a very busy time. My daughter, my baby... left to begin her career in the United State's Air Force. She is nineteen-years old, and the spitting image of her mother. I am at this moment looking at a picture of her when she was barely three-years old...just yesterday...or 5,840 days ago. I also know that it has been 36 days since I saw her smile, and 22 until I see her again...in that time, she will have become Airmen Ives.
My son Christopher was Married in October. He married a wonderful young lady, and they are in the process of starting their own family. He graduated from The Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and is now entitled to call himself Doctor Ives...yet just 2,190 days ago he was a graduating senior from Goffstown High School, a champion wrestler, a very good football player, and young man with a plan to study pharmacy. He is approaching 8,760 days, or his 24th birthday in June. The speed at which all this happened is breath taking.
In September I will celebrate 10,220 days being married to the most amazing person I have ever known. Each one of those days has been a delight to me. We have shared a good portion of those days, raising the two people mentioned above. That has been a gift that is more precious then either of us could ever have hoped to receive. The question remains...where did the time go?
When you are young an hour seems like a week, as you grow older, each year passes with alarming speed. I am ever reminded of the saying that "time is a thief, and that which it steals can never be returned." I look forward to the days ahead, not really sure of the number, but reminded that each day is precious, I hope to honor that gift by loving and living well, and pray that you will do the same.
