Embrace the winter

The winter in New Hampshire is no time to be hibernating in your home just because it is cold outside. Get up, get out, and try something new. There is no excuse for winter boredom in New Hampshire there is simply to many great things to do.

As an undergraduate student at Plymouth State University I have observed a trend on the campus. As soon as the temperatures drop the student population on campus starts to look smaller and smaller. Just the other day we had a snow day that canceled all classes. Many students rushed off to the local mountains to ski the fresh snow but many sat in their rooms staring at a Facebook wall that never seemed to change. Put the iPhone down for a second and enjoy the gift Mother Nature has given!

One of my friends at P.S.U. is part of the Outdoors club. He recently got back from an ice climbing trip at the local Rumney Rocks. They made their way up a frozen cliff using ice axes, crampons, and rope. This is definitely on the challenging side of winter activities but for those who can tolerate the risk, it might be worth looking into. For the rest of us not looking for the extreme rush that downhill skiing and ice climbing give, I can assure there is a winter hobby for you.

If you’re a runner looking to stay in shape for the winter, I understand your frustration with the treadmill. Cross country skiing is a fantastic way to get your winter cardio workout in. There are over 20 scenic locations in New Hampshire with views that will inspire you to keep pushing. If intense cardio is not your thing, a peaceful walk in the snow might serve your needs. Snowshoe rentals are available at almost anyone of your local outdoor sports stores.

There are too many winter activities for me to list, hopefully this post will help you get thinking of things to do during your winter weekends. Please share with us your favorite winter activity and what you love about it.
