In the last year of my Grandmother's life, she was bedridden, did not speak, and did not recognize her family. It was heartbreaking to visit her, hold her hand, and realize that she didn't recognize us. My grandmother was an exceptional person, she helped my Dad raise us, she was a kind, gentle, soul, whose love was unconditional. More frustrating still, was the lack of information, understanding and hope offered by those who provided care. The treatment then, was to make them as comfortable as possible, and wait for the end.
I felt a deep sorrow for all of our family, my grandfather, and dad, especially...it seemed so unfair to rob them of a wife, and a mom! To rob her, of her most prized possessions...her memories, family, and eventually, her life. The sword also cut her family, as they watched with a helplessness, that is hard to describe. Dementia is a cruel and heartless condition. It has touched my family twice, my grand mother and, my mother-in-law, as she struggled through her final days, I watched her, and my wife display a courage that to this day inspires me...fight till the end...fighting to hold on to her family, her dignity, and her memories. She was a true champion.
My family is not alone...My general sales manager has an equally agonizing story of his mom's struggle with the disease. Our customers have family members facing off against Alzheimer's, and dementia too. In fact, in every corner of the country, in every walk of life, in families rich and poor, Alzheimer's Disease touches everyone...and so, we must fight!
The fight continues at Boston University, at their Alzheimer Disease Center. They fight for families everywhere, they fight to find a cure. On May 13th, Belknap Subaru will hold an Alzheimer's awareness day...for every repair order we write, we will donate $10 to the Boston University Alzheimer Research fund...if you wish to help with that fight, think about matching our donation. On Saturday May 14th, we will continue the fight with a test drive opportunity, test drive any vehicle on our lot and we will donate another $10 to the fund...you may, once again match our donation. There is no obligation, to give...but this fight is one worth waging. Please mark your calendar to join us!
Today the outlook is much more hopeful...while the cure still eludes us, great research is being performed, and where there are people willing to fight..and research receives the funds it needs to search for answers...We must do our part...Team Timmons is walking for hope and we support their effort!
