Listening to the local news, one might get the impression that we have just entered another ice age. Highly coiffed, neatly dressed, attractive people, have spent days, delivering every imaginable detail about the low temperatures, and wind-chills.
I am left wondering...why? I have lived in New England all my life...New Hampshire for the last forty years, as far back as I can remember...January has always been, really cold. In fact one thing you can reasonably count on in New Hampshire...really cold weather in January, and a fresh crop of politicians looking to be President every three or four years. Oh yeah, and Erin Fehlau, will be smiling when you watch channel nine news!
Since I'm in the midst of a good rant, let me get this off my chest... the new thing seems to be, to warn people to stay home, every time we have a storm, with more than an inch or two of snow falling. What the Sam Hill is happening to us?
Back in the late 70's, as a young man, attending Manchester Memorial High School in Manchester...snow days were unheard of...we walked to school and home again in the falling solid white precipitation. I don't remember for sure, but I think it was uphill, both ways! When we got home we did our homework and then it was outside to hang with our friends. Now kids are warned to stay in doors, and their parents are shopping at the stores, buying up all the bottled water, and toilet paper. Please...knock it off!
People, people, people...this is not an emergency...it's just a New Hampshire winter. Bundle up, put on a scarf and boots, and go have some fun. Go shopping, go skiing, hiking, everything you moved to New Hampshire for...and do not worry, as is often quoted, if you don't like the weather...wait a minute!
