The Homestretch
By Colin McKenna
As we flip our calendars to May, the end of the academic year for Plymouth State
University, and many other New Hampshire schools, is in sight. The end of the academic year at Plymouth State University can be quite different from most other schools in the country. When spring finally rolls around, and with a little help from Mother Nature, Plymouth State once again becomes the thriving campus, it’s meant to be.
Our definition of spring at Plymouth State might be a little different from other places in the country. It only takes a little sun and a temperature in the mid 50’s, to see students walking around campus in tee shirts, and shorts. If that is shocking for you, remember we go to school in northern New Hampshire, and we don’t see the ground from mid-December until late March, early April. When the long winter finally ends we embrace the seasonal change and our campus flourishes once again.
The end of the year is bittersweet for many. The student body embraces the changing of the weather, but we also know that finals, presentations, and reports, are lingering around the corner. For many it becomes a constant struggle for finishing out the year strong and enjoying the nice weather. People tend to procrastinate until the last minute which results in long stressful days and nights in Lampson.
Try not to fall into this trap, let the warm weather motivate you. Get all your work done during weeknights so you can embrace the weather during the day without worry. Use the time you choose to be productive wisely.
Distractions like your phone and Facebook only delay you from getting outside to throw that Frisbee with your friends. Once you've put in the muscle grease for conquering the end of the semester you are ready to take advantage of the spring. For Skiers and Riders I highly recommend Tuckerman's Ravine to get those last turns in at the ultimate (big mountain) east coast challenge.
For a peaceful day on the river, the outdoors center has kayaks and canoes you can rent if you want to spend the day on the river. If your into music check out battle of the bands (5/2/14) followed by the spring fling concert (5/3/14) headlined by Smash mouth.
Finish strong and enjoy the weather my friends...
Colin
