Twelve years have passed since that horrible day...though the sad events of that day will forever be etched upon my memory, the weather that day was beautiful...not a cloud in the sky.
I was working for a group of radio stations in Manchester. I had an appointment that morning to meet with a new client in Nashua. I arrived at the restaurant that the client and I had agreed to meet at, and I waited for him to arrive. After waiting thirty minutes or so, it was apparent that the client had either forgotten, or blown off the meeting. I drove over to the Shell Station, which also had a Dunkin's, and went inside to get a coffee. As I passed through the door, and older gentleman passed me, leaving...he had tears in his eyes. I looked up at the television hanging over the check out, to see a plane slamming into the first tower. The announcer reported that there had been an accident, and they would bring us the latest once more information became available. I got my coffee and was driving back to Manchester, listening to Dan Pierce's radio show when the second plane struck...Dan Pierce correctly told his audience this was no accident.
At this point everyone of the salespeople, and the support staff, from the stations became employees of the News Department...we went from selling, managing, and customer service, to helping the news team gather information to share with the New Hampshire audience. Dan Pierce was remarkable that day, and the management of the stations did a fantastic job of keeping NH informed of what was happening. We were all stunned, saddened, and concerned for our country.
In the days that followed the nation rallied behind its leadership, and the unshakeable belief that in unity we are strong. I still believe this is true. We may not all believe in the same politics, we may differ on what policy, or program is right, but the message of this date, to me, is that even in adversity, together we are an incredible force for good, and our strength is only diminished when we put those petty divisions before our belief in one another...on this date we should never forget that we are, the UNITED States of America! Never forget!
