What is it that makes a Dad...special? Is it looking out, and seeing him, when you are playing sports or standing on a stage? Could it be the lessons you learn from him as you grow up...both spoken and simply observed? Is it the tough love we all sometimes need, when we veer off the path? How about sage advice offered earnestly and with love? How about the approving look you get from him when he knows you finally get it?
These are just a few of the things that make Dad a special guy. Perfection is not a prerequisite for being a Dad...even though we sometimes think of them that way. They make mistakes, have bad habits, and suffer the same challenges as all other people. What makes them special is their dedication to providing for those they love in spite of these things.
Some of the lessons don't become obvious until you are the Dad...for a time in my teens, I thought my Dad had a speech impediment. He would see me engaged in something foolish and would start...what the...what are you....I...I...I thought he was simply having difficulty speaking until my son and daughter did some of the same things, and suddenly, I was speechless. Those lessons may be the most important of all! The lesson is unconditional love! For that lesson, I am eternally grateful! I love you Dad!
As you walk into Belknap Subaru you are greeted by the smiling face of another great Dad...Bill Johnstone. He was a man of great integrity and warmth. He is the inspiration for much of what we do here at the dealership every day. His values, and approach to business, are carried on by his son Mark every day! On this coming Sunday we will all be celebrating great Dads...both in body and spirit...Happy Father's Day!
