1978...I graduated from Manchester Memorial High School. My best friend, Paul Nelson and I traveled to San Antonio Texas to audition for a rock band. We packed up travel trunks, guitars and equipment, hopped on a Trailways bus, and rode off...it was an adventure. Neither of us had traveled far away from home (well one time we drove to NYC to play our music in the subway...never found the subway, turned around and drove back home) but alas, we never made the audition, bad luck, and fate pushed us both into different directions. Paul served our country in the Navy, and I came home searching for a job. I remember those days, for the good times, good friendships, and the lessons that were wrapped up in and amongst those experiences, and friendships.
Today, I have children of my own, and it's my job to give the best advice I can, from my experience. I tell my children to enjoy life, and live in the moment, because time waits for no one. I tell them that being a part of a family is the most precious gift they will ever possess. I tell them to think with their brain, love with their heart, and live with a purpose. Lessons learned...lessons taught!
My father is a man of action, he is a natural leader, gifted, with the ability to communicate big ideas, with clarity, and confidence. Most of what I know about life, relationships, and people, I learned from him and my Mom, who had some of the same gifts. They were not perfect, nor am I, but the lessons they taught me are now being passed on. I hope I am as good a messenger. Like my parents, I am sure that some of the lessons and stories will take some time to matriculate...I sometimes ponder how things might be different if I had listened more carefully, and heeded sound advice...but life is an individual journey, and the trail we end up is the one we choose...I love my path...I hope my children will too!
